If you love to have fun outdoors, and would like to learn new skills, then this program is for you! Teamwork, safety, and leadership are stressed. Join us in June as we learn the basics of these outdoor skills: (archery, atlatl, canoeing, fishing, letter boxing, and air rifles).

Each child may only sign up to attend one day. Participants must dress to be outside the full length of program, wear sturdy shoes (no flip flops or flimsy sandals) and bring a water bottle that can be refilled. Bug spray, sunscreen, and a hat are recommended.

What is a Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR)? Where does it get its name? Is it legal to hunt with one? This course will answer all those questions plus many more. The MSR is one of the most purchased firearms on the market today… and one of the most versatile. The instructors will cover the parts of the MSR, calibers available, the basics of operation, maintenance, and care.

Walk-in (all ages) The Missouri Department of Conservation and Kansas City Police Department are partnering to offer a free movie experience at the Discovery Center. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs as a naturalist provides a short introductory program to get you connected with nature. The family friendly movie "Migration" will start at sunset with movie snacks available. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor at least one week prior to the program.

This is a novice class for people who have little or no experience in handling and shooting a handgun. We will discuss safety, types of handguns, different parts of the handgun, the variety of calibers, ammunition, and marksmanship. Class includes range time.

Walk-in (ages 12+) Nature provides incredible inspiration and one-of-a-kind supplies in our own backyards. As spring and summer colors have exploded at the Discovery Center, we've collected dried stems, flowers, leaves, grasses and more from our landscape to help you tap into your creative side. Explore a variety of colors and textures as you create your own natural summer garden lantern! If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor at least one week prior to the program.

MEET AT FOUR RIVERS CONSERVATION AREA for an evening of outdoor fun with an overnight camping option. Enjoy archery, fishing, (dinner break), a slide show on dark skies and a tour of the stars with telescopes from (TBD- Astronomical Society).

*This is a (Class 3) dark sky area. For comparison, the Blue Springs area is Class 5-6, two-three classes brighter. Four Rivers CA is about a 1.5-hour drive south of Blue Springs, MO. *Archery/fishing equipment will be provided by MDC for this program. BRING YOUR OWN FOOD, WATER AND CAMPING GEAR IF YOU CHOOSE TO CAMP FOR THE NIGHT. There is a privy within walking distance

and (NO ELECTRICITY). It is an MDC area, so no fees to camp, but we are very close to the office/shop buildings. All area regulations apply: fishing- 65 and older and under 16 don’t need a license, dogs must be leashed and NO OPEN FIRES..

Archery and fishing programs offered from 5:00PM - 7:00PM. Then, we break for dinner.

People may chose to fish again after they eat. Dark Skies/Astronomy program from 8:30-10:30PM.

People may choose to camp or drive home after that.
